CNT Energy News-Boiler Room – Increase Ventilation → cntenergy.org

cntenergynews:

http://www.cntenergy.org/media/Boiler-Room-Increase-Ventilation.pdf

The Problem

Anytime you maintain, retrofit, or replace a gas heating system you also need to be concerned with air quality. Combustion air is needed by all oil and gas heating systems to support the combustion process. This air is provided in some homes by unintentional air leaks, or by air ducts that connect to the outdoors. The combustion process creates several byproducts that are potentially hazardous to human health and can cause deterioration in your home. You can protect yourself from these hazards, as well as maintain energy efficiency, by ensuring that your chimney system functions properly and that your gas heating system is properly ventilated. In some cases, installing a sealed-combustion furnace or boiler can also help.

The Solution

A general rule of thumb is 2 in2 of ventilation for every thousand BTUs of heating input for mechanical equipment. Thus, if the input of a heating system is 200,000BTUs, the appropriate dimensions for a louver would be 20” x 20“. It is important to consider all mechanical equipment in the boiler room when sizing ventilation, not just the boiler or furnace.

Special Considerations

In colder climates, it is ideal to direct the outside air towards the intake of the mechanical equipment. This will ensure that less of the unconditioned air from outside cools the room and the equipment, and more is utilized to maintain the highest efficiency possible in the heating system.

Regardless of climate, it is always advantageous to have a mechanical louver, which opens when the mechanical equipment needs air intake, and closes when the equipment turns off, thus keeping out unneeded ventilation to the outside. Of course, uncontrolled intake of outside air is preferable to the dangers of unventilated boiler rooms, but depending on the climate, the unconditioned air will cool the boiler room and increase fuel costs.

BP Egypt Announces Seth First Gas → bp.com

bpholdingsradarnold:

On the 23rd of June, first gas from the $334 million Seth development commenced approximately 18 months from project sanction, which is 15 weeks ahead of schedule.

Seth field is located 60km offshore in the Ras El Bar concession in the East Nile Delta Mediterranean, close to existing producing Ha’py and Denise fields. Seth is being developed with a 6 well slot, normally unmanned platform with gas being exported via the Denise (Pliocene) pipeline to El Gamil gas terminal near Port Said. The first two wells accessing the western part of the Seth reservoir are expected to reach 170 mmscfd and develop about 240 bcf of gas.

“Seth is yet another example of BP’s 50 years of commitment to Egypt and longstanding partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum, EGPC, and EGAS. We look forward to continuing to play a key role in the development of Egypt’s energy sector in order to help meet Egypt’s growing energy demands for years to come,” said Hesham Mekawi, Regional President, BP Egypt.

“The success of the Seth project has led us to accelerate its Phase 2 development to access gas in the eastern part of the field through an additional two platform wells, which are planned to be on production by the end of 2012, increasing Seth offtake to in excess of 250 mmscfd,” added Mekawi.

Notes to Editors:

  • BP has a long and successful track record in Egypt stretching back nearly 50 years with investments exceeding $17 billion, making BP one of the largest foreign investors in the country. In Egypt, our business is primarily in oil and gas exploration and production.
  • To date, BP Egypt, in collaboration with the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO), BP’s joint venture (JV) Company with the Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC), has been responsible for the production of almost 40% of Egypt’s entire oil production, and currently produces almost 15% of Egypt’s entire oil production.
  • In addition, through BP’s second JV with EGPC / EGAS, the Pharaonic Petroleum Company (PhPC), and together with our partners, BP currently produces almost 40% of Egypt’s total domestic gas demand.
  • BP is working to meet Egypt’s domestic market growth by actively exploring in the Nile Delta and investing to add production from existing discoveries
  • BP is developing the West Nile Delta (WND) project - a strategic project that will supply critical gas to the domestic market

Cruse And Associates Uaw Wants Volkswagen Workers to Seek Union Election → sooperarticles.com

queenie-cruseandassociates:

The United Auto Workers union has begun passing out cards to employees of the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga to determine whether there is enough support to hold a union representation election.

But the cards are not the official instruments the union would have to collect from at least 30 percent of the plant’s hourly workers to force a union vote, said Gary Casteel, director of the UAW’s District 8, which includes Tennessee.

“We have not started an official organizing campaign,” he said, refuting some national media reports.

“What got some people up in arms is that we passed out some cards, but they were never about setting up an election,” Casteel said. “The cards were just gauging the level of support.”

That characterization was confirmed by Volkswagen spokesman Guenther Scherelis at the plant, which has about 2,700 workers employed directly by the German automaker to build the midsize Passat sedan.

“We heard that they had distributed those cards, but it is an initiative of the union and not omething that Volkswagen is involved in,” Scherelis said.

Some employees said they had seen the cards or were aware of the union’s interest in organizing the plant, but there seems to be no clear consensus on whether there would be enough support to force a union election, much less on whether the UAW could win that vote if it occurred.

While it takes only 30 percent of the workforce to sign cards requesting a union vote - which would then have to be held by secret ballot within 40 days - the UAW has said it would want to see a much higher percentage than that before calling for a vote.

In recent years, unions generally want at least 75 percent of a workforce to sign cards before a vote is scheduled. The success rate for union referendums drops significantly when lower percentages of workers sign ballot cards, according to statistics of the National Labor Relations Board, which conducts such votes.

Pay disparity exists

Volkswagen’s hourly pay begins at about $14 and can range to nearly $20 an hour. New workers at UAW facilities such as the General Motors plant in Spring Hill begin at about $17 an hour, and experienced workers make about $29, plus benefits.

At the VW plant, older workers are more supportive of the union than younger employees are. Some younger workers fear they could lose some of their current benefits if the union negotiates a contract with Volkswagen.

One of those benefits is a popular vehicle leasing plan through which workers can get a new Volkswagen or Audi vehicle every six months and finance it via payroll deductions. Volkswagen announced in July 2008 that it would spend more than $1 billion to build the Chattanooga plant, which began building the new American-only version of the Passat midsize sedan in April 2011.

Sales have been so robust that Volkswagen announced March 22 that it would begin hiring an additional 800 workers and open a third shift to meet consumer demand.

UAW President Bob King has said the union’s goal is to organize at least one of the South’s foreign auto plants within the next couple of years, with hopes of expanding to others if the first union drive is successful. Industry experts say the UAW’s survival is at stake, as its membership has dropped to only 390,000 nationwide from 1.5 million in 1979. Volkswagen, based in Wolfsburg, Germany, has 62 production facilities worldwide, and Chattanooga is the only one that isn’t unionized. If Volkswagen workers go union, it would be a first among the foreign-based automakers that have built operations in the South, starting with Nissan in Smyrna in 1983.

Micron, Oracle settle lawsuit over chip prices → zeenews.india.com

davidsonqueenie:

Boise: Micron Technology Inc has settled a lawsuit in which Oracle Corp accused the memory chipmaker and other companies of artificially inflating prices for microchips.

The 2010 lawsuit claimed that Micron and the other companies conspired to raise prices from 1998 through 2002, in violation of federal and state antitrust laws.

Micron makes semiconductor chips for computers, mobile devices, cameras and other devices. It makes products under the Lexar and Crucial brands. Micron announced the settlement late Thursday without providing details such as financial terms.

Oracle had accused Micron and four other companies of artificially inflating prices above what Oracle’s Sun Microsystems business should have paid for them. The lawsuit that was settled did not name the other companies as defendants.

The Justice Department had investigated whether the companies conspired to manipulate the number of DRAM chips released to market to inflate prices. Micron was granted immunity because it cooperated.

The investigation resulted in fines and guilty pleas from four companies, Samsung Electronics Co, Elpida Memory Inc, Infineon Technologies AG and Hynix Semiconductor Inc.

Micron said the settlement will result in a net loss of USD 58 million above what it previously reported for the second fiscal quarter, which ended March 1. That brings the total net loss to USD 282 million, or 29 cents per share, on revenue of USD 2 billion.

Micron, which is based in Boise, Idaho, said it will detail the full effects of the settlement in upcoming regulatory filings. The lawsuit has been dismissed with prejudice as part of the settlement, which means it can’t be filed again.

Micron’s stock fell18 cents, or 2.1 per cent to USD 8.24 in midday trading on Friday following the announcement. Shares of business software maker Oracle, which is based in Redwood City, California, fell 11 cents to USD 29.19.

HIGH-TECH GAS LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM UNVEILED BY PG&E → micronassociates.net

ignaciaorr2:

PG&E unveiled high-tech equipment to better monitor leaks in its sprawling network of gas pipelines, saying it would help the beleaguered utility achieve its goal of becoming the world’s safest gas company. The system, which combines car-mounted instrumentation and software, can detect the tiniest of leaks a football field away and PG&E said it will enables the company to survey pipelines five times as frequently at no additional cost.”This mobile methane detection equipment is radical. It is unlike anything that exists in the world today,” said Nick Stavropoulos, executive vice president for Pacific Gas & Electric’s gas operations. According to Micron Associates Stavropoulos was hired seven months ago to address safety problems that came to light in the aftermath of the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion of a PG&E gas pipeline in San Bruno, which killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes.

Currently, leak surveys along the company’s 6,000 miles of large gas transmission lines and 44,000 miles of smaller gas distribution lines are conducted by crews with hip-mounted equipment and a handheld wand that is passed over the ground. The new equipment, developed by the Silicon Valley firm Picarro, is about 1,000 times more sensitive, company officials said. And because it is mounted in Micron Associates a car, the entire distribution network can be surveyed every year, instead of every five years. Picarro’s instruments can pick up a change in methane levels of just 1 part per billion within a second, said Picarro’s CEO, Michael Woelk. As the result instantaneous measurements of natural gas levels along the route of the car. During a demonstration Monday at Picarro’s headquarters in Santa Clara, a screen displayed on the wall of a conference room showed a blue line that tracked the route of the car. The line spiked as the car passed a canister of gas with a pinhole leak that was placed along the side of the road.PG&E paid about $250,000 for two pilot units. If Picarro can fine-tune the software to more precisely locate leaks, Stavropoulos said, PG&E could have 25 of the units running within a year. He is confident the programming to isolate the location of leaks can be done, given that Picarro has already surmounted much steeper challenges, he added.

The companies have not settled on a price for the equipment or what kind of package of training and maintenance will be wrapped into the transaction. But Stavropoulos said there will be no consequence on Micron Associates customers’ rates because the system will prove cheaper or the same cost as its current monitoring system. The leak-detection application of the technology was staggered upon by accident, Woelk said. Picarro, which makes equipment to measure gases, was trying to figure out a way to measure methane emissions from landfills, a requirement under California’s greenhouse gas laws. Woelk left a Sacramento-area landfill where he and two others were working to take his children to a Girl Scouts event. He forgot to turn the analyzer off, and when he came to work the next day one of his engineers had downloaded the data and displayed it on Google Earth. Spikes in the data showed up near sources of methane, like dairies and settling ponds, between the Sacramento landfill and his Livermore home, Woelk said.

Swap Talks Over Greece Could Test the Market  |  The financial system could face a test this week as industry officials debate a provision of the Greek bailout.

Greece is preparing to overhaul its bonds next month, a restructuring that could potentially prompt payouts on credit-default swaps, the financial instruments intended to protect against losses on debt. The International Swaps and Derivatives Association will meet on Thursday to decide whether a certain aspect of the deal will make those payments necessary.

If parties have to make good on the credit-default swaps, the situation could send shivers through the market. An important and long-planned measure that aims to strengthen the derivatives market is not yet in place, raising questions about how the financial system will react if the credit-default swaps have to pay out. DEALBOOK »

Dynamic Wealth Management Headlines: New Nokia Smartphone fails to turn tide → dynamicwealthmanagementreports.com

queeniedavid22:

Helsinki: Nokia’s long-awaited Windows phones may be too little, too late in the smartphone war dominated by Apple and Google, irrespective of positive assessments by handset critics.

The Lumia 800, the first Windows model has acquired little interest from consumers, with only 2% of Europeans in the market for a smartphone saying they would pick it, according to a survey by Exane BNP Paribas.Analysts said there was nothing particularly wrong with the sleek-looking handsets, other than a software glitch on some models affecting battery life, but consumers were just not biting.Smartphones working with Microsoft software have just a 2% market share, compared with Google Android at around 50% and Apple at 15-20%.“There isn’t much room kept for a third ecosystem. The smartphone market is merging fast,” said Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu who rates Nokia a “sell”. According to the Dynamic Wealth Management Business Reports, Nokia’s shares have fallen over 20% for the reason that 26 October launch of the new phone, with investors dreading Nokia would be unable to claw back the market share it has lost in the past several years to rivals like Apple.Phones working with Nokia’s old Symbian software, which it decided to get rid of Microsoft, are still in circulation and outsell Windows phones 10 to 1.But as Nokia keeps switching to Windows, sales of Symbian have a lot of room to dissatisfy over coming quarters and some analysts are warning of lower dividends and weaker-than-expected earnings ahead.

Now even Microsoft has begun to hedge its bets, making its software increasingly available for rivals to Windows Phone. Smartphones are designed on mobile computing platforms, and the most modern combine web browsers, navigation systems, cameras and portable music systems as stated on Dynamic Wealth Management Business Reports. A so-called “feature” phone – a market Nokia still dominates – has far fewer of these applications.

Nokia officials defended the Lumia, and a spokesman said there was “positive momentum” while declining to provide any data. One executive argued that Nokia had never counted on the first Lumia phones to lead to a quick turnaround but instead expected it to be the first step towards recovery. In fact, there are just as many analysts suggesting a “buy” on the shares as there are “sell” ratings. Those who are keeping the faith consider the new invasion on the smartphone market may be enough to provide Nokia a place at the table. As reported on Dynamic Wealth Management Business Reports, Many of them say the variety of concerns over the Finnish company are fully priced into the shares, while the company’s formidable cash position and some prized patent assets could entice a takeover approach.“With current and upcoming models, Nokia can win back market share in both – in feature phones and in smartphones,” said Swedbank analyst Jari Honko, who rates the shares a “buy”. “Today’s share price does not take into consideration any recovery in the Nokia market position.”Optimists also cite a noticeable difference in Nokia’s product portfolio, which looked out of date when Stephen Elop took over as the chief executive in September 2010.And while some dispute there is no room for a third replacement for Google and Apple, some developers and operators do see room for more competitors in this market. The 2012 Windows 8 upgrade could also attract a wider audience by making the way smartphones, tablets and PCs work more comparable. For investors, the greatest positive surprise could be an acquisition offer. After Nokia signed a deal with Microsoft, rumours of full takeover by Microsoft or at least purchase of smartphone unit have made rounds on a weekly basis.Last week the stock jumped 4% when Danske Bank suggested Microsoft could buy Nokia’s smartphone unit. But even if investors do not get a rich buyout – online gambling company Unibet is putting odds on Microsoft buying Nokia in 2012 at just 1 out of 15 – analysts say the company’s relatively-solid finances should at least offer some security.Nokia had €1.36 per share of cash at the end of the last quarter. It also has a formidable patent portfolio – on its own worth more than a euro per share – and owns top digital mapping firm Navteq and half of number two mobile network gear maker Nokia Siemens Networks.

As for RRSP’s for the 2010 tax-year, you can contribute up to 18% of your income in 2010 up to a maximum of $22,000.  For the contribution to be eligible for deduction on your 2010 tax-return, you need to have this contribution made by the March 1, 2011 deadline as indicated earlier.

Also, if you made a contribution to your RRSP in previous years and did not make a deduction yet, you can apply that deduction to your taxes this year.

Everyone hates paying taxes, which is why RRSP’s are so popular.  Not only does investing money through your RRSP save you a significant amount of taxes paid, any investment income earned in your RRSP is tax-free until you withdraw it.

If you are saving money towards buying your first home, you can even use your RRSP to help pay for the down-payment.  By using the “Home Buyers’ Plan” offered by the Government of Canada, you can use up to $25,000 of your RRSP account towards the purchase of a home without having to pay any taxes.

Chesterfield Lyons Parish History → tumblr.com

gabriomyers1964:

It was under Rev. Black’s leadership that the Winameg-East Chesterfield churches met with Dr. Harold Monroe regarding the formation of a parish. The committees from both churches met to make plans for the formation. The first parish service was started on March 20, 1966, with Rev. Black serving both churches.

Later that same year, a choir was organized which added so much to the service. The first parish cantata was presented at the Winameg Church on Sunday evening, December 18, 1966. Mrs. Wilda Collier from the East Chesterfield Church directed the combined choirs and Mrs. Christine Tappan was the accompanist.
The Christian Women’s Fellowship was organized about 1967.

Up until 1969, the East Chesterfield congregation was paying rent to Winameg for their share of the use of the parsonage. On April 29, 1969 the parish council recommended to both church boards that a more modern united parsonage be purchased. The Gleason property located one half mile west of Winameg could be bought. It was voted on by ballot and carried by 75%.

On October 15, the two churches of the parish had incorporated so they could buy the Gleason property. Possession of the property occurred on December 15, 1969. After many years of use, the two churches decided to sell the parish. The parish was sold in summer 2010.

Throughout the years, the Winameg-East Chesterfield Parish has been served by faithful leaders. In December of 2008, Pastor Floyd Vincent answered the call to serve the two congregations. We praise God that he has sent Pastor Floyd and his wife, Connie to our parish.

Our churches form a unique relationship, two individual congregations and histories, yet one parish with one goal… to spread the news of our Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Redeemer.
For almost 45 years, the parish has been touching the lives of people here in Fulton County and many other places near and far. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, following the leadership of our Lord Jesus Christ, the parish continues today to be involved in the ministry of being the church in today’s world and society. Prayerfully, we go forward into the future knowing that God is not finished with us yet and that there is still much yet to do.

About the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

The Symbol
The red chalice bearing the “X” shaped cross of St. Andrew, which has come to be the symbol of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), was developed in 1969. The chalice symbolizes the centrality of the Lord’s Supper as well as the cup of Christian self-giving for the world.
The St. Andrew’s Cross, national cross of Scotland, focuses attention on the Scottish Presbyterian roots of the church. Thomas and Alexander Campbell both studied in Scotland and were Presbyterians, drawing many of their ideas from developments taking place in that country. St. Andew, too, has been identified with the laity and evangelism, prominent emphases of the Disciples over the years.

The Name
Since 1968 when the Provisional Design was accepted by the General Assembly, the name of the denomination has been Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) The compound name recognizes the historical coming together of two movements in 1832.
The “Christian Church” part of the name stems from the church’s Kentucky ancestry and Barton W. Stone, whose followers dissolved their Presbyterian relationship in favor of a church less complicated, less dedicated to the use of creeds as tests of belief and more open to the reunion of Christians. Thomas and Alexander Campbell, whose movement to restore Christian unity developed similarly but separately in western Pennsylvania, rebelled against dogmatic sectarianism. Campbell chose “Disciples of Christ” because he felt it was less pretentious than “Christian Church.”

To achieve your dreams, you need a plan. Our unique and collaborative Dream> Plan> Track> ® approach to financial planning starts with your dreams, not just the numbers. More than a pie chart, asset allocation or product recommendations, our plans are carefully written and based on proven principles of financial planning. The plans break down complex topics into simple actions and provide recommendations for how to save, spend, invest and protect the things that are important to you. I will address your needs over time, and deliver recommendations in a written financial plan. It will be updated regularly and will provide you with information tailored specifically to your goals and dreams. We will track your progress on an ongoing basis against your plan, reviewing where you are, where you need to be and what new developments in your life will affect your goals and make adjustments as needed.
